The Importance of Energy in Your Business

Ever heard the phrase “energy flows where attention goes”? It’s a well-known phrase attributed to Tony Robbins. Effectively he is describing what Psychology calls a ‘self-fulfilling prophecy.’

If you’re not familiar with either of these concepts, essentially they’re describing how life becomes what we make of it.

The lens through which we view life affects the decisions we make, and the actions we take or don’t take. This begins to unconsciously lead us on a path that matches our thought process.

If we consistently are focused on the negative aspects of life, or our business, we’ll continue to see more of the same. Or the opposite, if we focus on what we’re grateful for, or what we’re excited about, we’re more likely to create situations that are good for business.

Don’t believe me? Think about this example: You buy a car in a certain model, for fun let’s say it’s a blue Mini Cooper. Suddenly you see Mini Coopers everywhere on the road. Why? Because our brain has now acknowledged a new object in life, and begins to seek patterns that affirm it. You’re in fact looking for more Mini Coopers when you don’t even realize you’re doing it.

So how does this work in business? In more ways than one…

First we’ll visit the negative. If you’re showing up to your business each day in doubt, disbelief, or desperation, it will bear an effect on everything that you do. Your tone of voice, your body language, and the words you use will all reflect these feelings to the outside world, even when you’re trying to hide it. Your ‘vibe’ will show a business owner that doesn’t believe in their business. So the more you tell yourself' “I’m not good enough for this,” or “people will never pay me this price,” the more you’ll create a world where that becomes the truth.

Even the clothes you wear can affect how you represent your belief in your business. Dress for Success is a 1975 book by John T. Molloy about the effect of clothing on a person's success in business and personal life. In it he shares about a San Francisco artist that was struggling to sell his art.

He was dressing down, in clothes that made him disappear into the crowd. Once he owned his artistic self, he changed his look. He grew out his hair and had more vibrant clothes with paint on them. He dressed to match his product, and showed up as if he belonged there.

Did it work? Absolutely. His art started to sell!

But this example is only a small subset of how your behavior changes when your energy shifts. When you believe in what you’re doing, you have intention behind your actions. You have goals, and a drive, that change how you behave in the world. You have vision.

This shifts your priorities and with shifting priorities comes new agency. When you have clear goals and devote your time and energy towards them, you stop waiting time on things that don’t matter. This in turn helps you feel successful and excited, which keeps you feeling good about your efforts in your business.

So it’s your choice. Which way would you prefer the spiral goes? Up or down?

Understanding that energy flows where attention goes is the first step toward the mindful achievement of goals. With this powerful concept in mind, you can train yourself to focus on the positive and enhance your mindfulness Once you start attracting more of what you want in life, you’ll understand the power of focusing your mind and becoming obsessive about the goals that matter to you most. - Tony Robbins
